What if there's a tie vote in a bracket?
We flip a coin.
Okay, a digital one. When a matchup ends in a tie, the winner is picked at random, 50/50, and the bracket marks that matchup COIN FLIP so everyone knows fate stepped in.
It sounds lazy. It's actually the only tiebreaker that works. Every other option either stalls the bracket or gets gamed.
The options that stall
Hold a revote
Same people. Same opinions. Same tie.
Revotes in a small group either loop forever or end when someone gets bored and flips their vote just to make it stop. That's not a verdict. That's attrition.
Wait for someone to cave
Brackets don't have a clock. A deadlocked matchup could sit there until the heat death of the universe, and the rest of the bracket would sit there with it.
The options that get gamed
Let the commissioner decide
Now the commissioner has a secret extra vote in every close matchup. That's a lot of power to hand the person who already picked the topic. It's also a fun way to end a friendship.
Give it to the higher seed
Then the seed list quietly decides every close call, and the underdog loses every tie by default. (Random brackets don't even have seeds to fall back on.)
Any rule you can predict
The moment people know how ties break, they start voting for the tiebreaker instead of the thing they actually like. Whoever voted first wins? Now everyone races. Whoever won bigger last round wins? Now everyone votes three moves ahead like it's chess. The bracket stops being about opinions.
A coin can't be played
It doesn't care who the commissioner is, who voted first, or which entry was seeded higher. It just decides, instantly, and the bracket keeps moving.
Nobody gets mad at a coin. (Fine. People get a little mad at the coin.)
Don't want a coin flip? Politick the room
Ties happen when the room is split. So don't leave it split.
If you love something and you don't want its fate decided by a coin, go campaign. You can see who hasn't voted yet. Those are your swing voters.
- Text the group chat.
- Make your case. Bring receipts.
- Remind someone of the time they said they loved it.
- Form an alliance. Promise a favor. Consider honoring it.
The coin is for people who didn't campaign hard enough.
Setting one up? Pick an odd number
Every voter has to vote, and every vote goes to one side, so a tie is only possible with an even number of voters. Invite an odd number and the coin never comes out. Math: the original peacekeeper.
